Everything he got involved in did not work out or dissapointed him in the long run. It was just too bad that he lived in a time where racism was a huge issue in the country. Even though it has died down alot, i still feel that racism is a problem. People seem to dislike others that they consider different. I always thought that people were supposed to be different and unique. I think that as our country becomes more diverse, racism will play a much smaller role.

Ideology

A great example of ideology in The House Of Spirits is when Blanca tells Pedro that someday they will get married. Since they live in a time where it is not accepted for a peasant to marry a high class women, Pedro is wise enough to know that the chances of this are rare. It was cool to read about a folk hero from a foreign country. He had many aspects of an American folk hero, but just tailor-made for Mexico. However, I had some hard times figuring out if Cortez was actually a real person or not. I liked how the different versions told a slightly different story. This proves that details change as a story is relayed from person to person.

Blood Wedding

I feel bad for the mother in this story. Pretty much every man she has ever cared for suffered a violent death. One of her worst fears becomes reality, and that fear is being alone. The whole time it seems as though she is expecting her last son to die in the same way. The groom could have easily avoided the situation if he had noticed the strange behavior between Leonardo and his wife to be. But if it wasn't for Leonardo messing up his plans, there would be no story. Overall, I enjoyed the reading, but this tale of love seems to be very common and over used.

The Awakening

After reading this book i felt bad for Edna. She obviously was not happy playing the typical role of the rich Victorian lady. I was sort of expexting her to commit suicide, or at least something else drastic. I believe her suicide was premeditated. Maybe the reason she had her servant prepare a big dinner is so the drowning looked more like an accident. If it was an accident the communnity may never know that she was unhappy and going crazy. Plus, who would kill themselves when they have some good home cooking waiting for them? That would be enough to keep me alive for a bit longer.

Yellow Wallpaper

This story was strange and confusing to me. I was not sure exactly what was up with the lady. Throughout the story she mentioned her husband, but it almost seemed that she has distorted thoughts. From the way she described her house it sounded like a mental institution, and her husband could have been the doctor. Regardless of whether or not the author truly was ill she gave a good description of what may happen to a depressed person. The author definately had me convinced that she was crazy.

Fred Douglass

After reading this autobiography by Douglass i have learned some things about slavery that were obvious, but never really taught to me. You mainly just hear about the long hard work, horrible living conditions, and the harsh treatment by the slave owners. One thing that my history books failed to mention was how these people were torn away from their famalies. I could not imagine what it would be like not ever knowing my mother and father. Also most of these slaves had no idea when or where they were born. It is a shame to think that this was accepted in society once before.
